MasterCard and Visa are the best cards. Both of them really help to build credit and look real good on your credit report. American Express has only two card with no fees (membership, annual, monthly, etc...) But American Express isn't accepted at a lot of places, Visa and MasterCard are accepted everywhere.

Check the various offers you get. AMEX requires payment in full and usually a membership fee. Visa, Mastercard may also require a fee depending on the lender and your credit.
Whatever you do, make sure you can handle the credit that you are given. Establish a good credit report and only put the amount on your credit card that you can pay off each month. Don't put your financial future on hold by paying off stuff you bought in the past.

MasterCard and Visa have been strong rivals from a long time, each competing to be faster and more universal than the other. Every benefit offered on the credit card of one brand, is soon offered by the other. Today both companies provide mostly similar benefits like travel insurance, car rental insurance, product warranty extensions etc.
Both cards are universally accepted by about identical number of merchants. Majority of the merchants round the world take both cards, or if a merchant accepts only one brand, the merchant next door accepts the other. Hence whatever you want to use for the credit card for, you can be assured you won’t be disappointed, just because you have only one brand. Except for a selected few events, where only one brand of card is accepted, most of the times you will be ok.

AMEX is it's own world, but VISA and MasterCard are just brands. You have to find a good bank or credit union to back the card. VISA offers more consumer protection in the event of fraud. If you have a bank account, take a look at what cards they offer. I prefer my credit union's VISA card. No fee, low rates, excellent service, and they even offer the perks (cash back and points).

I've never used Amex, so I can't comment on that one. However, between MasterCard or Visa, it really depends on the bank that you're using. Many different banks (i.e., Chase, Orchard, Citibank) have MC or Visa cards, and it's the bank you select that determines the interest rates, as well as any rewards programs.

VISA seems to have better service and rates than the other two.
Mastercard is relentless and arrogant over the phone.
Amex seems ok but expensive.
