When i think of a "lapdog" I think of something in the toy group. Someone mentioned a cocker and they should have excellent temperaments when you get one from an excellent breeder. I know I brought my first cocker to a nursery school to play with 3 year old with her first litter. I only watched that no one ran in the hall because I trusted the line and my female completely and that is how a cocker should be. A cocker will also follow you from room to room around the house, but I would not call them lapdogs, unless you are a tall person with long legs and a big lap.
If your children are the gentle type or beyond the toddler stage and not rough and can respect a small dog, I would consider the Japanese Chin which is very small, not yappy always happy and very smart. The pug is not quite as lap dogish as it has a wide body less conducive to being carried, but a Boston which is not a toy might be a bit more of a lap dog.
What ever breed you choose make sure it is one that you will love simply because it has a look that melts your heart! Sooner or later it will have an accident on the Persian carpet or the sofa and if it has that special appeal to you it is much more likely to have a forever home. Also your kids will grow and change, but the dog will live for a long time. It deserves an owner who loves it.

I have always had a big dog. I have my first lapdog. I got a Shih Tzu. I had thought about getting this type of dog and then someone was giving one away that was a year and half old. I just love him. He loves to cuddle in my lap. And comes and lays on me when Im stretched out watching T.V. He is gentle when he plays. and he is very smart. The Shih Tzu and Llasa Apso look real similar. My son has a Llasa Apso and my Shih Tzu has a smaller snout and bigger eyes then his Llasa, but otherwise look very similar. Either Shih Tzu or Llasa Apso are good for an indoor dog and do not require a big yard. If you do get Shih Tzu or a Llasa Apso, one warning Is to buy a good dog food that contains No Corn. Alot of these dogs are allergic to corn and sometimes wheat and gives them a severe itching problem. We buy a brand called Nutro in Lamb and rice ( small bites)which contains no corn or wheat. These dogs also require grooming. I have mine done in a puppy cut and he looks nothing like the picure on the site Im sending you with this cut. I am sending this site to you that you can look up and read about small breeds. Hopefully it might be helpful to you. Good Luck! Oh yes, almost forgot to add both dogs are good around my grandchildren. I have a 3 1/2 year old and and a 9 month old. although my Shih tzu was a little jelous of me holding the 9 month old and he wants to be in my lap at the same time which is awkward. But that has been the only problem Im having. http://us.eukanuba.com/eukanuba/en_US/jsp/Euk_Page.jsp?pageID=DBSSA&breedName=146

The key "word" being "LAPDOG" I definitely think that a Yorkshire Terrier, Cocker Spaniel (may be a little larger than a lapdog, but a GREAT dog for children) or Shih tzu would be the choice.

Ah, my yorkie would snap at children who wanted to pet him.
He did not like kids. He was fine with adults.
A lapdog good with kids... Maybe a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel? That's just a guess.
You could look into adopting a small adult dog from a shelter-- that way you would know the dog's temperment-- if the dog was good with kids.

Most all of the toy breeds were developed to be lapdogs and they don't require much space at all. If you have small children probably one of the larger toy breeds like perhaps a pug would be a sturdier choice. I would advise that whatever breed you get please don't leave it unattended with your children for their sake and its.

I grew up with a Cocker Spaniel. They make really good family dogs and don't get that big so they don't need a big back yard.

Cavalier king charles spaniel.
i had one once and she was easy enough to take care of.
They don't need too much exercise, don't eat too much, and are VERY good with children. They are also VERY cute!!! They also come in four different colors so you have a variety to choose from.
try this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cavalier_King_Charles_Spaniel
