Its quite old and doesn't have it written anywhere on it. It does have a long loading pin though into which the pellets go. From what I can see on the internet pellets are either .22 or .177
I've measured the diameter of the loading pin/magazine and it looks like its about 5mm, which would suggest its a .177 but I want to know for sure before I buy. Any ideas? (OTHER THAN TAKING IT TO A SHOP!!)

Its a break barrel but holds about 20 pellets. Its also quite heavy.

There is a pretty big difference. Is it closer to the size of a BB or a 22 long rifle bullet?

Unless it's a nice/powerful rifle it is likely a 0.177 that is the common size especially for the plinker type air rifles.

sheridan air rifles used to be only 5mm is it a pump -- or break open barrel there is a big diffrence in 177 and 22 there are several 20 calibre air rifles now which is the same as 5mm

Haven't touched any weapons since my time in the military. Suggest you take the loading pin to a gun shop or a surplus store that sells weapons. I know that K Mart used to sell weapons, but the clerks are not always gun savvy.
