I wish I was as talented as Salvador Dali. His work just amazes me. I could look at Salvador Dali paintings for hours. Who is your favorite artist of all time and why?

You picked on of my faves...I actually got a book fo his paintings and using a special chemical...managed to lift his pictures from the paper and transfered them onto wood..Worked out great. You can see the wood grain right through them. Really added a neat feature.

I like Dali and Jean Arp and Juan Miro as well, from the Dadist school, but my favorite artist is Claude Monet. I like the Impressionists, including American Impressionist Robert Henri, because of the unique way they were able to capture mood and light. I have Henri's "New York in Snow" on my wall--in Florida, where there is no snow, but I still feel cold when I look at it!

I love Jan Vermeer. His art is so personal and simple. You feel a connection and an understanding (understanding of what? I don't know, I just feel like I "understand" when I view his work) when you look at his pictures. His art can also be so simply sensual and tasteful.

I definately think that Dali is quite interesting (him and his art), I live in St. Petersburg, Florida, so I have the opportunity to view a very very large collection of his art (The Salvador Dali Museum). I did my senior project on him and the museum as well. But he is far from my favorite artist, he just interests me.

You have all chosen very obvious "favorites" except for Jan Vermeer (actually Johannes Vermeer). I will not go into detail about why Vermeer is a substantial srtist b/c good art cannot be explained in a simple sentance like "I really enjoy it" That is the most primodial stage of art.... Beautiful art is like philosophy it cannot be explained in such meaningless ways.
Before you come here and tell of your favorite artist do more than a "google" on them.

Of all time, I would choose Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo second. In modern times, I think Dada artist Marcel Duchamp has proved to be the most influential. His "anti art" approach has continued through other movements, such as Pop Art and Conceptualism.

He is the best of the surrealistic artists, but I stick with Winslow Homer for my tastes
