Go to a busines supply store like "Staples" or "Office Depot".

You can buy Accordion files there with slots for each day of the month....Buy 3

Start with receipts for the latest month and file them buy day
Same for the month before
and the month before that.

Go through all the other receeipts and only save major ones, (rent, and anything related to taxes) throw out the rest.

As each day goes on, add new receipts to your file, take out 3 month old receipts and throw away except rent and taxes.

The best advice I've ever heard for filing anything is to ask yourself the following question: "When I need to find this later, what will I think of?" Whatever your answer to that question is, that is what you should label the file. As far as tracking expenses, Quicken, Microsoft Money, or a similar program are good.

If for credit cards keep them until monthly statement comes then throw them away unless it is a big item with a warranty - in that case staple it to warranty. If not a credit card I do not keep mine at all - if not needed for a quick return just trash them.
