Although the Scots lay claim to golf in the 15th Century, there are earlier records of a similar game of using a club to hit a ball to a target. The least number of hits wins... sounds like golf to me! Such claims came from China (11th Century) and the Netherlands (13th Century). In fact, the name 'golf' came from the Dutch 'kolf' meaning 'club'.

As for the first clubs, there is evidence now that the Chinese first use them during the Song Dynasty (960-1279AD), some 500 years before it became Scotland's 'invention'. The game was played with 10 clubs including a cuanbang, pubang, and shaobang, which are comparable to a driver, two-wood, and three-wood, with pictures to proof it. So we can say golf clubs were invented in China.
