A break at the hosel is usually the result of a low quality club. There is a chance that a high quality club, hitting the ground very hard, on a very cold day could break, but that doesn't happen often. If the club has been mistreated, i.e. thrown, banged into the ground etc, then there is a much higher likelihood of this happening. Without knowing any more about your clubs I would say that you probably got them for cheap, and got what you paid for...

Most likely you hit the ball with the shaft of the club and it broke. Its like breaking a bat in baseball, it comes from a terrible mishit. Take a look at your swing on video so you can identify swing faults.
