I'm buying a new car in the near future, probably a medium-large V6 sedan, and I'm not sure whether I should but an automatic or a manual. I've driven a manual all my life, and I was hoping someone could tell me why I should go one way or the other.

This is very subjective but since you are a seasoned manual driver I would stick with them.

They are much easier to control and repair and are much better in weather conditions because as far as I know they are all rear wheel drive.

The only drawback is that most of the new cars on the road are automatics.

Sports cars, many foreign cars and cars like the Mustang and Corvette are manual transmission. I am assuming that you are not a "granny" driver or you wouldn't be driving a manual.

Except for a very few cars in my past and mostly out of necessity did I own automatics.

I am a senior citizen and I own a 65 Volvo with 385K miles on it and in excellent shape and it is manual. And I own a 1988 Alfa Romeo Spider it came in manual.

Good Luck with your new car!!!

Efficiency wise, new automatic locks up and provide same efficiency and the 8 and 9 speed auto are not bad but I love rowing through the gears and have missed it badly. I am looking for a manual transmission in a luxury sports sedan...no luck so far. The CTS-V was my last hope but now I'd have to go used as the 2016 now comes with an 8 speed auto. YUK.

You should buy what you are most comfortable driveing. I have driven a manual since I was 18 and now I'm 32. I'm sick of driving a stick. I don't think you would notice the difference in gas milage and if properly maintained either one will last a very long time. Also, An automatic is much more comfortable to drive in a traffic jam.

I would say if you arent getting tired of shifting i would stick with manual.

1 More fun to drive
2 more control
3 better milage
4 it is cheaper to replace a clutch then to have an automatic transmission rebuilt especially in a front driver
5 If you your auto transmission fluid gets over 350 degrees(375 for synthetic) your fluid loses its lubricating properties
6 manuals transmissions are cool(you can imagine your driving a race car)
7 less people will ask to borrow your car

If you are just tired of shifting then maybe go automatic, but if you are still happy healthy and can handle the stop and go traffic stay manual,, its just better,,, less parts to break..

After spending over $6000 repairing 2 automatics, it's manuals for me from now on. Autos are great in traffic, though.

Well, since you've driven stick all your life, you should know the pros and cons.

With stick you get a slightly better gas mileage but it's a hassle in traffic.

I only purchase automatics.

automatic, for convience, ease of operation, resale value. also if you have a wife that might have to drive it at times, she will prefer an automatic.
