In general, the younger you are when you have braces, the faster your teeth will move, so you will have to spend less time wearing them. It's not unhealthy to get braces at an older age, it just might take longer for your teeth to move. There may be some problems if you get them too young -- for example, your jaw might not be done growing and you'd have to get braces again to correct the changes. It's also more socially acceptable to have them when you are younger -- you might as have braces when everyone else is wearing them too!

When I went in for my checkups, there would be 50 year old ladies getting their braces on. If you get braces on before most of your teeth are in and stop moving, you are going to need them again. There is also evidence that getting braces before your roots have matured can damage the roots.
If you are wanting braces, go ahead and get them. Some magazine did a poll on what aspects of a persons looks mattered most, and concluded that perfect teeth were 2nd most important after weight.

The younger you are, the faster your teeth will move and the faster you can get your braces off. I had mine on for a year and a half when I was 13-14 and my mom had hers on for abour 3 years she was 37 when she had hers put on.

health wise: it doesn't matter when you get them,
but it is better to get them early so you have more sellf-esteem for the rest of your life and unless you can afford the invisable kind, adults are often made fun of for having them.
