by people who do not use proper spelling or use text speak? It's "the" not "da"!! Why do I find this so infuriating?!

And just for the record, I don't find it means that people are less intelligent, just really really lazy.

Thank you Snowman for the constructive comments. However, if you actually read the question, you will see that the "by" is following on from the line above. "Do you get irritated by..." It is Yahoo who has added the question mark after irritated. If I had a comma after "or" this would also be gramatically incorrect. Now run along, nobody likes a clever d***. Or should that be Clever D***??

Yes it gets to me too. youngsters just like to get up our noses. They speak, badly dress ridiculously to piss us off..(well what do you call those slack trousers that hang halfway down their bums with the crotch around the knees??).
It has always been thus...we have to accept it..they will grow up eventually..cross fingers.
Snowman 70..you don't need a comma before a conjunction:
(and,but,or etc)

I do get a little irritated with text speak even when they are not texting... its just not proper English!
I do sometimes shorten my words while texting but that is it! Everything else its proper English if I can... even in e-mails and letters.
Some people were saying that schools are failing to teach their children proper English because they go for nonsense languages because its 'cool' and 'clever' which is a bit of a joke!
I got a text once or twice from my teen cousin and her text was totally a mystery as it was in full text code. Gosh! It is like shorthand for teens in their own make up language - jargon if you can call it that???
By the way I found a couple teen lingo text....
(not intending to annoy you!!)
Hello there sexy
= LO der sexC
Would you like to accompany me to the shopping centre for a candlelit dinner?
= wud U lIk 2 accompany me 2 d shopping centre 4 a candlelit dinr?
Two happy meals please
= 2 :-) meals pls
Yes, I'd like to see the soft drinks list
= yS, I'd lIk 2 c d soft _/z list
Are you on the pill?
= R U on d pill?
'aye-yea naw-no pure-summit' in teen lingo... meaning 'good'. Why can't they just say 'good'?? its shorter!!! ha ha
I must say I love that slang 'oh go sleep in a tree' term which means 'shut up, what ever'. ha ha.

I expect you find it infuriating for the same reason I do. Because it's disrespectful. Not only to it's parent language, but also to the wider community, who choose to communicate in that parent language.
When dictionaries, text books, newspapers, and the little fold-out instructions I receive with 'put it together yourself' furniture come printed in "txt", I'll recognise it as a valid language.
Until then, it'll remain little more than a childish 'secret code', or evidence of linguistic laziness, to me.
But I'm a grumpy old man, so, "whatever...".

I agree, as I get older I become more and more annoyed by people not spelling words correctly, using text speak (every message one gets now looks like a Prince album track listing!) and not pronouncing words correctly. The one example that is really winding me up at the moment is "reconise", the word is "recoGnise" there is a G in there you know!! Just listen to how many people say reconise, I think its another example of Chavvy reality TV "stars" influencing the general public for the worse.

Yes, it irritates me intensely! Test speak is fine for texting, it's a useful shorthand and that's what it was invented for but it is so annoying when people use it on Answers. I always take care with my spelling and grammar because I feel it is vital in getting my message across.

Whats irritating about it is the use of it in school! I know several teachers who are giving failing grades to students who cannot use the proper English language in the classroom. I understand briefing up a conversation for text messaging, but leave it at that, please!

No, it doesn't bother me. To each his or her own. I always use "proper" spelling except once I answered a question about Kevin Garnett. They used to call him "da kid", not "the kid". I hope that didn't irritate you!

Absolutly. I hate trying to figure out what people are saying. Especailly when they use numbers in their words. It's infuriating. And I'm going to appologize now that I can't spell. :)
