Bunosera!!

Well English is a real mixed language!

As we were conqured by so many different cultures, each bringing their own language along, over the years we developed the highbrid of english!

English might actually be the hardest European language to master, as all the others use Masculine and Feminine words, and have set groups for verbs!

English has so many little bits and pieces that are hard to explain, like why "Sean Bean" isn't pronounced "Shaun Baun" Or "Seen Been" It's all very complicated!

Despite all this, the majority of us brits feel that when we travel people should speak english for us, and not us learning the local lingo!!

So hope that helps you out a little!!

English is what is called a Kitchen Language, because it was spoken only in the kitchen by women. This is why there is almost no grammar, no feminine and no masculine and it was not a written language. It is an agglomeration of several languages, Welsh, Scottish, Irish, Celtic, Vikings, Danish and more, even now Anglo-Saxons and USA English, Asian English, African-English. This is the price to pay to stay popular, even in England where Cockney is still spoken today.

We speak English because our parents and grandparents spoke English, so we don't know any different. English is pretty much the only language used in normal life.
Of course you CAN learn others if you want to, but you can function perfectly without it. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't learn other languages.

According to such authorities as the Venerable Bede the Angles Saxons and Jutes settled in Britain in the 5th and sixth centuries and their language gave rise later to English. It replaced the languages spoken here until then one of which gave rise later to Welsh.

We don't we speak lots of languages.
We get a lot of our words from Latin, Scandinavian, Indian, Spanish and of course Italian amongst others - we absorb the best of all things, that's why we are 'Great Britain'
I speak a little Welsh and Italian as well as my English, French and Spanish

Because English is the national language of Great Britain, and it is what you are taught to speak as you grow up, through school and then into the world of work.
