It is best to avoid chat on the internet, because of the predators out there. If you want to talk, call a friend or talk to friends or others in person. That way you know who you are talking to.

I have personally talked to several people who were online, it is interesting to "meet" new people that way and to be able to talk to someone from another country or anywhere in the world... The thing is that you don't give out personal information and just talk casually and friendly... I also know that long distance relationships are really hard, so don't get romantically involved!
Yes, you are right about the fact that we don't really know anything about these people, we cannot see them and they may present themselves differently than they are in reality... just like we do on this Yahoo Answers, we can put our avatars up, but it might not be what we really look like...... so just be careful... we can have good conversations, talk back and forth, but just be sure that you have your limitations! No phone numbers, addresses, etc... do not go for a "meeting" unless you are very certain it is worth a risk! On the other hand, I am aware of how it can work the other way and strangers have met online and fell in love... getting married isn't too bad as long as you get to know them really well first! I met my husband this way, and got married 4 months later... I know it was pretty darn fast though!
I am very cautious about letting my teenage daughter talk to just anyone too, there are some serious dangers with predators !!!!!
