My wife and I have heard two different things on this. We have had indoor cats for a few years and are thinking about having children. She wants the cats gone because she says that kitty litter/urine is toxic to babies/humans. And all that I have heard is that the clumpable kitty litter is toxic to cats because of the sodium bentonite and the clay dust that gets into their lungs.

Can anyone help us with this? We would appreciate any and all feedback that you have concerning this matter. Also please include any links to websites if you have any.

Thank-you!

Toxoplasmosis is a disease caused by a parasite, Toxoplasmosis gondii. Most cases in humans result from contact with cat feces, particularly those of cats who hunt rodents or birds. Non-hunting cats who stay indoors 100 percent of the time represent a much smaller risk. So, not the urine, but the feces.

the best thing is to ask your dotcor if its safe to have a cat or dog around when having a baby...they usually say its not a good idea to keep pets when you have small kids...to be sure talk to a doctor...coz these ppl will give you a idea but you wont be sure what to do..coz ya want a child...and you want to keep your cats coz you love em...now who do you choose thats not the question...its how do you have a healthy child...i would say give it a good friend who loves cats may be a relative...then have a child and then when the childs 2 or 3 yrs old get a new cat...

During my sister's three pregnancies, she told me the same thing, so she didn't handle changing her cat's litterboxes. It's definitely something in the fumes.

She'd read it somewhere and had heard it from her OBGYN, I believe.

Sorry I can't be more specific.

If you aren't letting your baby play in the litter box, it really won't matter.
