You don't actually need to convert DivX .avi files to play them on Media Player. What you need to do is install DivX codecs (COders/DECoders ... see the capital letters).

The first site is for DivX codecs, but it also allows playback of XviD files too.

The second site is to download DivX codecs and DivX player.

The third site is for the codecs directly from DivX Labs, the company.

Alternatively, you may wish to download a codec pack. (I use K-Lite Mega codec pack, and I've yet to find a movie that it doesn't play.)

The final url is for a 'cut down' K-Lite codec pack. It doesn't contain all the codecs of the Mega pack.

play them in the divx player its free at www.divx.com
converting onto dvd use nero
