I use to be a server so I am firm on always tipping at least 18-20%. I typically tip the hair dresser 18-20% and the shampooer $3-5. I spoke with my hairdresser about this previously, and he stated that he typically gets about 10-15%. He works in an expensive salon, and believe it or not people usually are more generous w/ cuts than colour-I guess b/c they shell out so mush more.

Well, for the general rule, it is a 15% tip for your hairstylist... you can go to 10% but it's like the idea of how well they did their job!
Like when you go to a restaurant, does your waitress do her best to serve you? Tip accordingly...
Ok, so it gets expensive to tip everyone... how many people are actually doing the work on your hair? Is there a shampoo person? Then a couple of dollars would be ok for them... but as far as I know, it is mainly the stylist who is doing the most work! I give mine 15% and she always does an amazing job for me! Some people just cannot afford a big tip every time, but believe me, every dollar in a tip jar adds up to help that stylist! I know!

There should only be two people working on your hair the wash girl and the hairdresser. I tip them both, depending on what I am getting done to my hairI usually give the hairdresser $5-6 and the wash girl $3-4.

Here in CA, we don't have that problem. One person does all the work on us. Everyone should get a 15% tip. Now I said should. If the shampoo girl gets you all wet or uses cold water, adjust. If you live in an expensive area, Manhattan for example; expect to pay more.

You tip about 15%, unless it is a place like supercuts.... You never have to tip the owner of a salon, but they usually charge more...
