Because their idea of supporting the troops is to simply slapping a cheap plastic ribbon (probably made in China) on the back of their vehicles.

Continuing to honor the nation’s commitment to meet the needs of America’s veterans, Secretary of Veterans Affairs Jim Nicholson announced on Feb. 5 that President Bush will seek a landmark budget of nearly $87 billion in fiscal year 2008 for the Department of Veterans Affairs, with health care and disability compensation for veterans receiving the majority of the spending.

READ THIS NEXT PART CLOSELY!!!!!

The budget proposal represents an increase of $37.8 billion, or 77 percent, from the budget in effect when the President took office.

The proposal calls for $42 billion in discretionary funding – mostly for health care – which is the largest amount ever requested by a president. It also would provide $45 billion in mandatory funding, mostly for compensation, pension, educational assistance, home loan guaranties and other benefit programs

EDIT: it wasnt the the republicans who stated vietnam!!
blame the demoncrats for that

I'm a vet, and I know. And it's a damn shame that the media doesn't start covering it until an election year. that way one of the bought and paid for politicians can make an issue out of it. As a medic I have seen it up close and personal. and dealt with it when i got out. AND IT HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE THE START OF THE AFGAN WAR.

yes the numbers of dead is low in the war. the number of lives lost is HUGE!! these people will never be able to lead normal lives again. and they number in the the 10's of thousands. last count around 30,000 injuried!!

Yes modern medicine is great!, we can keep a bloody stump alive for ever! just as long as he is not counted as a death!!

Good luck and God Bless you and your family.

If you'd look at history, they did the same thing to the Viet Nam vets. And the only reason that they are talking about changing this is because they are getting pressure from the American people. My husband served in Nam. Not because he wanted to, but because the government drafted him. This poor guy is messed up mentally because of watching his buddies die, but there really never has been a good program out there for helping vets cope. (And the Viet Nam vets were spit on when they came home). P.S. the republicans are the war mongers.

I wish more people felt as you do. During the Viet Nam era thousands of young americans were serving with a starting pay of $4.00/day, BUT we were promised free health care for the rest of our lives at VA medical facilities. Starting with Regan and continuing with every republican president those benefits have been undermined and taken away. After serving from 1970 to 1984 I no longer have free medical care I wait up to 4 months for appointments. I don't mind having to drive over 200 miles for care, I don't mind having to wait in the waiting rooms. I do resent that in spite of an annual income of less than 25,000/yr for a family of 4 I AM CHARGED FOR MY CARE, with Bush intending to increase those charges.

Why spend all that money when they are going to be redeployed and killed anyway. Seriously, the current regime does not care about our troops at all. It's truly sad that they have no qualms about them dying for a senseless and baseless war.

If you know of someone who is in need of assistance, contact the Veterans Administration yourself and see if You can make the difference. Who knows, maybe our Veteran is too proud to ask but maybe we can help.
