...most of the whitening strips, or whitening by dentist, are supposed to not hurt your teeth; however, your gums might get sore for a week or two
...i have heard that brushing your teeth with baking soda 3 times a week, and brushing with hydrogen peroxide 3 times a week (dont swallow it).... can make some difference
good luck :-)

There are a number of at-home whitening products out there. There is goo that you paint on your teeth everyday, whitening toothpaste, or whitening strips. They all take around a week to show results and are anywhere from $3 (for the toothpaste) to $30 for the whitening strips. As far as I know all whitening products make your teeth more sensitive to cold (some more than others) so you'll want to use a straw when drinking and cut down on things like coffee, tea, and cola which stain your teeth.

Brush them at least 2 times a day, when you wake up (or after your first meal) and then again before bed (That is mandatory.)

Just don't brush them more than 3 times a day, but 3 times is good as well.

In about 3 or 4 days, you will notice a difference, just be patient. Don't buy anything... all you need is a good toothpaste (maybe Crest or Colgate whitening) and that's just as much as your average tube of toothpaste. You might want to try a medium hardness toothbrush as well, good luck, trust me it works! =]
