Depression or unipolar depression is characterised by low self-esteem, lack of motivation, tearfulness and generally low mood. Manic, or bipolar depression follows a pattern of depression with the same symptoms as above and periods of mania. This involves feelings of elation, erratic mood-swings, and excessive activity.
What basically happens is the brain becomes flooded with certain neurotransmitters causing the mania and as these effects wear off, the resulting drop in neurotransmitters results in depressive symptoms. The patient will go through periods of mania and depression that can change rapidly.

Depression is more constant, while manic depression is also known as bipolar disorder, where you have major (scary) highs of manic behaviour, and terrible lows. Try looking up the Depression Alliance online, they have good info there...

Bipolar disorder, once known as manic-depression, is a diagnosis in psychiatry referring to periods of extreme, often inappropriate, and sometimes unpredictable mood states.
Bipolar individuals generally experience mania, hypomania or mixed states alternating with clinical depression and euthymic or normal range of mood over varied periods of time. There are many variations of this disorder. Generally, however, a person with bipolar disorder tends to experience more extreme states of mood than other people, moods which can change quickly (many times a day) or last for months. Mood patterns of this nature are associated with distress and disruption, and a relatively high risk of suicide. Bipolar disorder is also associated with a variety of cognitive deficits, in particular, difficulty in organizing and planning.
Bipolar disorder is usually treated with medications that help to stabilize mood, and/or therapy and counseling.
Some studies have suggested that while bipolar disorder alters emotion, there may be a correlation between creativity and bipolar disorder, although it is unclear what the relationship is between the two
Depression
Depression, or a depressed mood, may in everyday English refer to a state of melancholia, unhappiness or sadness, or to a relatively minor downturn in mood that may last only a few hours or days. This is generally seen as quite distinct from the diagnosis of clinical depression. However, if depressed mood lasts at least two weeks, and is accompanied by other symptoms that interfere with daily living, it may be seen as a symptom of clinical depression, dysthymia or some other diagnosable mental health condition, or alternatively as sub-syndromal depression.

In simplistic, non-medical terms, depression is just the lows while manic depression is characterized by swings from very high (happy, creative, energetic) to the lows (sad, lethargic, not having any fun at all).
I personally believe that this is due to chemical imbalances that can also result from overproduction of insulin. Check out the symptoms link at www.hufa.org, if you are curious about symptoms of one blood sugar imbalance that can result from insulin overproduction (hypoglycemia).
