They calm you down. I remember years ago a CEO of a large company proposing that beta blockers be used in prisons in order to have less violence. After he started taking it for blood pressure he saw how it had changed him.
They would be used in sports that require concentration. I think they test for them in some sports though.
"Dr. Linn Goldberg, a professor of medicine at the Oregon Health and Science University and a spokesman for the Endocrine Society, said that beta blockers could affect people differently but that they were often used to combat a person's adrenaline flow.
"You can see that happen with someone putting, or shooting archery, or a doctor using it before giving a talk," Goldberg said in a telephone interview. "It does steady your nerves because it combats adrenaline when you get nervous or your palms get sweaty and you have a crowd of people around. It mellows you out."

Beta-blockers act on the heart to reduce heart rate, force of contraction and blood pressure. The specific mechanism behind this involves calcium transport proteins but this is quite complex. Essentially, they have a 'calming' effect which could be utilised by sportsmen/women so they have steadier hands such as in shooting. However, they wouldn't be used by athletes as they need their heart rate to increase so they can take in enough oxygen to meet the demands of their intense exercise.
I don't think these drugs are legally allowed to be used in sports but obviously doesn't mean they are not used.

For some sports it is reducing your heart rate, may be of help for runners and increase endurance. For other things like shooting it stops the fine motor tremor making them more steady and a better shot. Not uncommon for concert musicians to take them to stop fine motor tremor.

They're a performance enhancing drug for snooker players, darts players and archers and so on. They slow the heart beat down and steady the hands but they do urine tests for it.
