Be sure to check with your physician first!

I wouldn't do it. I had a root canal last week with only novocaine (no nitrous) and I felt NO pain whatsoever. They shot me up about 6 times but it worked fine. I also left without a prescription for any painkillers. I took 8 Advil when I got home and I was fine. (They also removed 2 wisdom teeth that same day)

I grew up using nitrous every time I visited the dentist. I'd get it when I was going in for simple fillings. I probably had used it at least 30 times (I had/have bad teeth) I realize now that I always needed it because of my anxiety (that and the fact that I was a teenager and I liked to get 'f**ked up')
One day, they had it turned up a bit too high and I felt my heart slowing down and I was having a hard time remembering to breathe. I was unable to speak and I was paralyzed. I thought I was going to die on the chair. I could still think clearly but I couldn't move at all. They only realized something was wrong because I stopped responding to the questions they were asking. It was very scary. Everyone in the office was kind of freaking out after it happened so I guess it was a pretty serious situation. After that incident, I'm very wary of nitrous and I wouldn't want to mess with anything by taking a strong painkiller before using it.

I wouldn't do it if I were you but call them up and ask. They may tell you it's ok and they then may be a little more careful monitoring the amount of gas they give you. They might give you less gas if they know you took some sort of prescription painkiller beforehand.

Talk to your dentist.

I recently had a pretty extensive set of dental procedures, including a deep cleaning, a filling, a root canal, and a porcelain crown. The dental assistant swabbed my gum with a topical anesthetic, and when the dentist came with the needle, I didn't even feel the stick.

While I could hear and feel the vibration of the grinding tools he was using, I never felt more than a slight twinge in the area he was working on. It was mush less intense than the toothaches that led me to the dentist in the first place.

The dentist will very likely ask you to raise your hand if you feel any pain--and if you do, he'll bomb the nerve again.

Your anxiety is a lot worse than your experience is likely to be.

You should be really carefull about this. You may take the pain medication regularly and have no side effects. But the addition of the novacaine and laughing gas may increase the effects of the pain med., to the point where it is dangerous to your heart.
You do not want that. Speak to your Dentist about your concerns, he may be able to give you a stronger dose of novacaine, instead of you self medicating yourself.

Ask your dentist...last thing you want to do is overdose or have a lethal reaction to the anesthesia. Incidentally, I *personally* haven't heard of anyone using Nitrous Oxide any more.
