It's just my wife and I at home. She claims she is allergic so I may have to keep him/her in the garage so she has limited exposure. We have no other pets. He/she will not have much human interaction during the day but I would like a bird that does not "attach" itself to only one family member. NO, I DO NOT WANT A COCKATEIL............Thanks for your advice......I want to make an informed decision

You are talking about getting a larger bird who is going to be kept in the garage. If he cannot interact on a regular basis because your wife is allergic.

The bird is going to become neurotic and start some very unkind behaviors. Like plucking its feathers out or worse screaming at the top of its lungs all day. Then he will learn some unkind words because you will then be yelling at him.

My advise is to look at getting a different type of animal. If you insist on a parrot do your homework before you buy. Cockatiels do make great pets also.

Ok, sense you mentioned allergies a cockatiel will not do. The one thing that is really hendering my suggestion is the fact that you say they will have limited attention during the day.

Quakers are small, cute, and talk well. But, they need attention or they can become quite mean. However, if properly socialized they can be friendly to more than one person.

Parrotlets are small, cute and can talk. They don't need as much human interaction.

If you want to go a little larger you could go for a solomon island eclectus. They are capable of entertaining themselves for longer periods of times.

To be honest there aren't many birds that fit into your criteria...ie not one man birds, not needing much attention. another thing that you'll need to take into consideration is the heating/cooling in the garage. some birds can not stand extreme heat or cold. Qaukers are pretty hardy where this is concerned. they can live in extremely low temps. Also, if you work on cars in your garage a bird will not last long with some of the fumes. Just a few things to consider. I don't know how much help it will be.

Well, first of all I wouldn't recommend for you to get a bird and keep it in your garage. Birds need plenty of attention. You say you would like a bird that talks. You have to have the time to repeat words to the bird. Being in a garage the bird would get lonely.

I wouldn't recommend a Cockatiel as they have a lot of dander as do the Cockatoos. People and some birds are allergic to the dander. Mind you Cockatiels are great little birds and make wonderful pets.

That's great you want to make an informed decision. I just wish all people would when they decided to get a bird. There are so many unwanted birds out there.

I'm owned by 50 something birds, from P-Lets to Cockatoos. I have taken in some birds that have had to be placed with me due to feather plucking, self mutilation and just screamed all day due to being lonely and the people didn't know enough about the specie to properly take care of it.

If I were you I would think about getting another kind of pet that would fit into your household without being left out in the garage.

Birds are social animals and keeping a parrot in the garage is not a plan. they actually love human attention especially the only ones that are legal to buy in the USA are domestic bred and most breeders like to hand feed that means that from an early age they are used to human contact.
What your wife is most likely alergic to is their dander ( this is the powder that breaks off of their new feathers that come in.) I would not suggest a cockatoo because they are very dusty birds. As far as people oriented I have had blue crown conures that where very friendly and loved everyone in fact my female used to watch TV with my father all the time.
and she talked and she would play dead for you . As far as talking the Severe McCaw is one of the best and will learn all sorts of things and they too like people.
Read up on the different types of birds and make the decision on what is best for you. then try to keep the bird in the house a garage is not a good place to keep a bird. Even if you keep it in a room of it's own and bring it out when you get home.

I cannot make you do anything but i can say that you should NEVER keep a bird in a garage. If i were you i would SERIOUSLY consider another pet. birds are NOT easy to take care of.(trust me, i have one myself) And there is NO type of bird that will talk without much human interaction. If you want it to trust you, you're not going to have much luck. Birds need a lot of attention, exercise, and care. I'm just going to say that if you get a bird and won't be able to give it much attention and will have to keep it in the garage you will KILL it!!!

i totally, 100% agree with kaska & bird lady. no animal should be kept in a grage! espesialy birds! they need sunlight and fresh air. i would pick another pet if that is the only possibilty. if not, i definitly would have to go with my passion, the parakeet, or budgie. they are small, extreamly friendly, and some of the males can learn to say words, and both sexes can sing and churp, imitate human sounds, like wistling, and make and adorable little churpy gurgleing sound! if you can move the garage idea out of your head, that is my answer. i would also get at least two, scince thew won't have anything to do wile you are gone all day.

Do not get a pet bird you will be unhappy, your wife will be unhappy and the bird will be miserable.
Having a parrot is like having a small child they need far more attention that you are in a position to give it.
It would be a waste of your money and a tragedy for the bird

The garage is NOT an appropriate place for a bird unless it is made up as a regular room.

ALL birds need interaction and several hours of out of cage time. I don't reccomend you get a bird. Sorry

I agree with Kaska.Birds should never ever be kept in a garage!
They are social creatures who need human interaction with people and not be left in a cage all day.It would be like you staying in a shower stall all day with no one to talk to.There is no guarantee that any bird will talk, they have to be worked with and even then there is still no guarantee!.PLEASE , PLEASE, THINK ABOUT YOUR DECISION TO GET ANOTHER PET! It really dosent sound like this is going to be a good situation for anyone.

You want to make an 'informed decision?" You wrote: "so I may have to keep him/her in the garage" HOW DARE YOU. That is called animal neglect. You have NO RIGHT to purchase an animal. I see you care only about entertainment, and don't give a toss about the welfare of the animal.
