sit is easy. grab a treat, put it at his nose but don't let him eat it. pull it over his head slowly. it is instinct for him to sit down to follow the treat. as you move the treat say "sit" then give him the reward and congratulate him when he does.
there are a few things you can do to avoid the jumping. first, never never never pet him when he does it. i've heard people suggest two methods to stop it. one is to completely ignore it when a puppy does it and they will eventually stop it. the other is to gently push him down and say "no". I prefer the first method.

First you need to let the pup learn his name. If you give a command always use his name first. Say his name is Joe, you say, Joe sit. If he sits you say good Joe! Follow it up with a gentle pat. Next what I would do is get Joe to learn that the leash is his friend but not a toy. Leash training separates play time from serious school time. Take time every day for both. Sit and stay followed by come are the three keys to getting your pup to know that you are the pack leader. Dogs understand hundreds of words but his name, sit, stay, and come are the key words, after that everything else will follow. You may want to enroll in an 8 or 10 week course in basic dog training. It will socialize your pup and get you to be consistent in your training. Just a few weeks of schooling will help give you a life long companion. Good luck with it.

You're going to get a lot of lectures from a lot of people - the best advice I can give you is to get two books (www.dummies.com). Puppies for dummies and Labrador Retrievers for dummies. (no on I'm not being sarcastic) They are great guide books, easy to read with great information.
Petsmart and Petco may carry them. But they go over crate training, house breaking, basic training, possible behavior tendencies, possible medical problems that are prone to the breed, how much exercise and feeding they need, etc etc etc.
You need more information than one person could post.
To curb the jumping, have your puppy become very profiecient in sit. DO NOT give any attention unless the dog is in sit. He'll catch on so eventually he'll run up to you and sit waiting for attention. Do not yell, scold, calm, coax, sooth etc when the dog jumps, you're giving him what he wants whether positive or negative - and thats attention.
Click a leash on so you can keep him under control while training. Either sit and an immediate down if the dog is VERY excited.
Good Luck and Congrats.

There is a lot more to training your pup than just gaining control over two commands. The easiest and most efficient way is to contact a local obedience school and take him to puppy kindergarten or if he is over 5 mos. to adult Basic Obedience. Labs are smart but boisterous don't waste time looking for a quick fix because there isn't one. The money you spend teaching him the basics will be well worth it in the future. With all of the basic commands, heel, sit, stay, down, come you can teach him anything that you want, even complicated tricks.

1. NEVER hit him
2. FOOD is number 1
3.You need to be patient.
Most dogs can only be trained for not longer than 15 minutes a day. They easily get bored with the subjuect that you are teachind.
Labradors are basically a smart dog, you must know that they love water so much. Take him swimming. Then give him a treat then ask him to follow yur orders.
I am quite an experienced in teaching dog the tricks.
I have a 1 year old Pekingese, most people understand that pekingese is one of the laziest dogs. But my peke is very very diligent and too smart. Somtimes i just hate him for being too smart.
When he was 9 months old, he could do more than 10 tricks.
For me, the only key to a succesful teaching your dogs new tricks is to treat your dog like your kid. Im very sure that dogs are very very sensitive to their owner's inner feeling. THEY KNOW YOURE MAD but THEY WILL NEVER KNOW WHY. Trust me they can really sense them. Therefore, in order to give your dog tricks, you must be stable with your mood.
Good luck

Gently push him down and say OFF in a commanding voice. Then push his little butt down and say SIT. Keep it up as long as it takes. Don't get discouraged! He's still going to be a big dog and no one wants them jumping up.

Well, they're gonna want a reward....a nice belly scratch! Whenever they jump, hit him on the nose lightly and say "no!". To sit...hmm...scratch it's head and then it should sit? Say "sit!" Whenever he sits, and when he doesn't, get him in the position and say "sit." Easy! And you might want to teach him "Stay!" too. Good luck!I luv pups!
