In my experience, first dates just include a lot of hanging out.
I've hung out at bookstores/coffee shops, gone to art galleries and generally just frequented any place with a relaxed atmosphere suitable for talking.
I don't know if you should take her to a "restaurant", if only because you're not sure if she expects you to pay or not. And you might think it's ok, but what if you don't go on another date- you shouldn't have to spend too much the first time around.
You're just there to get to know each other- if the weather was good, you could've gone for a walk (I'm assuming it's cold though).

We don't know where you live, but if you take a girl out to dinner at a quiet, romantic restaurant, you have a good public place to talk and get to know each other while you eat. After dinner you could catch a movie, take her dancing or ice skating. Don't make a first date a movie or concert alone, though. You sit in the dark and can't talk to each other.

Not something to romantic, like a candle light dinner. Take her somewhere public, a movie, amusment park, somewhere where you are not completly alone so the pressure is off !
