Cats usually don't like direct eye contact; they view it as a challenge. But, if you'd like to make eye contact with your cat, make sure to "blink." Not just any blink. Really squeeze your eyelids together and do it slowly. If she/he blinks back... success! When cats blink at you they are content and happy and they're letting you know. On the other hand, if you want to make your cat wild, stare at him/her with very wide eyes, and DON'T blink. Flaring nostrils adds to the dramatics. Then, start breathing a little heavier through your nose. Your cats pupils should start to get huge. She/he will either run away scared or charge at you. Funny stuff! A good book for you to read is "So you think you know about cats?" by Ronald Rosen & Francine Hornberger.

Direct eye contact means 'I am interested in you'.
Hunting cats do it with prey, and dominant animals do it to remind an upstart who's boss, it leads to a fight if one doesn't back down.
It feels less uncomfortable if its with someone they feel close to, same as with us. If a stranger stared at you in the pub, then mde too much eye contact, you wouldn't see it as freindly. You wouldn't mind it from your partner, its an act of intimacy with someone you trust.

When your cat looks at you and ever so slowly closes his eyes into a little squint - this is kitty language for "I love you."

I believe that this gesture means the same thing when humans perform this act of love towards their feline friends.

They do make eye contact. It's fun to have a staring contest with your mog and see who blinks or turns away first (see Garfield books).

Because they see it as a threat/challenge. Before cats fight with eachother, they have a "staring contest", so if you stare at a cat, they see it as an act of aggression.

For the same reason why all animals, including humans, dislike making eye contact.

'Staring out' is one means by which animals try to gain the upper hand over each over.

never knew that they hated it, but I have noticed that when my cats pupils are small and then get dialated(big) after looking at him, close up, he attacks. So once I notice that I back away from him, before he can swipe and claw me.
