I know this is going to sound funny - but I have no human experience on this topic, however I did get my dog through TWO cruciate tears! I decided to have the reconstruction surgeries done on both rear knees (the injuries occurred about 18 months apart), rather than put her through the pain.

The vet told me that, like humans, the k9 knee does not "require" a surgical fix, and the injury can be lived with. However, I watched my dog struggle with the inability to use her legs and suffer with the pain involved - and decided there was really no other solution.

Each surgery went perfectly, as well as the healing processes. She limps a little still on one leg, but it's only been about 6 weeks since her most recent surgery. She is at least able to USE both legs with out serious discomfort, ant that's the point.

I would say to you that if my 13 year old dog can pull through the surgeries and recovery periods as well as she did, you CERTAINLY can do the same or better! Do not fear surgery, especially this one. They are very common nowadays, and the pain-free results after recovery will make you wonder why you didn't do it sooner!

GOOD LUCK!

Torn my ACL-MCL-MML and ripped up the cartilage in a construction accident had 4 surgery's 10 years later still hurts everyday. But each case is different so give them 1 crack at it if no improvement is found than skip any more operations. good luck
