there are many ways of food presrvation

1. salting
2. marinating
3. smoking
4. sundry (but it also need salt)
5. refregeration
6. soaked in vinigar

well. .that is all i know but for sure that is not the only way of food preservation :)

1. Cooking -- Although not actually a long term solution it was just natural after discovering fire and kept foods for a few days to weeks that would have roted in a couple of days if left raw.
2. Dehydrating, including smoking, sun drying, etc This is likely the oldest true form of preservation.
3. Salting The reason that salt was such a valuable commodity in very ancient times. This may have preceded dehydrating in some geographic areas. Adding other natural preservatives and pickling came later.
4. Refrigeration and freezing -- These were used as the seasons or location allowed but have been used even in primitive cultures for centuries. Evaporative cooling and ice making techniques were an early discovery. Also, included in this are cold cellars, etc.
5. Adulteration -- Processes such as adding a benign fungus that makes cheeses last without refrigeration, etc.

The most traditional way of Persevering food I have heard of is Salting back a Long time ago they would take there foods and put them in a big barrel of salt doing this not only persevered the food but help give the food a better taste.
