At this time of year, the mucous membranes tend to get very dry. You can have some slight cracking and bleeding of those membranes as a result. Add to that, a cold or post nasal drip, and you may have a small amount of blood in your phlegm.
You may have a scratchy throat because you're having some post nasal drip. That pnd can cause you to cough because it slowly runs down the back of your throat, or settles in the back of your throat while you sleep. If your nose is a little stuffy, and you have some mucous running, it may be blood tinged from the irritated, dried up membranes. That's probably why you tasted blood.
Make sure you are hydrating yourself very well. During the night, either run a cool mist vaporizer, or set some pots of water near the heat vents in your bedroom to help moisturize the air. Be sure to change the water daily. You may also want to try some saline nasal spray, which you can get at a drug store. Get the non-medicated stuff, plain saline.
If you see more blood, or continue to have a productive cough and a fever, go see the doc just to be sure everything is ok. Otherwise, try the above suggestions and don't worry about it. :)

If you have an irritated throat and the coughing was heavy you may well have ruptured a small blood vessel in your throat. Dont worry too much, it shouldnt cause you any problems. Do you have allergies? It is highly unlikely that you have an infection if the mucous is clear.

Don't be worried by one of the other people who said it could be TB, the likelihood is that isn't anything serious. I have coughed up blood in the past and it is naturally worrying, but it was just a throat infection.
Do see your doc about it, just to be on the safe side.

sounds like you might have an infection, so go to the doctor and get some medication to clear it up. people often cough up blood after lots of 'safe' coughing because you've stressed your lungs and throat so much. a lot of phlegm can also be a pre-runner to flu, so best to get yourself on meds!

don't neglect that cough and get it treated by either allopathy, ayurveda or homeopathy.
