I took Malarone prior to, during, and after visiting Kenya as advised to by the doctor. Its an anti-malarial tablet. But everyone who I know who takes it has bad side effects, principally stomach cramps... does anyone know of a good alternative?

Tablets affect different people in different ways. If Malarone worked for you, stick with it - another drug might not work so well for you. You shouldn't really go with someone's else's recommendations - you should always speak to your GP.

I have never known an anti-malarial without unpleasant side effects....there are basically no good alternatives, apart from not going to infected mosquito ridden countries. Some remedies can induce heart problems and the development of suitable treatments is so underdeveloped that doctors from some countries even prescribe strong anti-biotics (doxicycline) as an alternative preventative !!! .....and bearing this over use/abuse we wonder why certain infections are becoming resistant to antibiotics.

I can't give you the names of any alternatives, ask your doctor. But I will agree with what the first person said - would you rather have stomach cramps or malaria?? My father was an aid worker and he stopped taking his tablets because of the horrible side affects. A couple months later he died from malaria. It might seem like some foreign disease that doesn't affect us westerners but malaria can and does kill.

they work, plus stomach cramps are better than malaria. All meds have some form of side effect to some people. Worst bit is, they taste disgusting!
