Set the meter at the voltage level that is just above the rating of the battery. For example, the meter probably has a 2V dc setting. Use that for a battery rated at 1.5V.

However, with no load, you might still get a reading that indicates the battery is good. For the test to be real you need to connect the battery to a load.

3V DC, if it isn't an automatic one. Note that it will tell you the voltage, but not how much current the battery can produce at that voltage.

Consider putting a 10 ohm resistor (1/4 or 1/2 W) across the battery and then measuring. It will draw about 120 mA, which should be less than 10% of a good battery's current. If the battery can't hold the voltage at a 10% load, it isn't long for the world.

Alternator & Battery have been "Load examined?" Voltage is nice yet once you do not have the "Amps" to push the Voltage then not something will artwork appropriate. "Load attempt" the Alternator to make certain you have become the "listed" Amperage, Low Amps skill undesirable Diode(s) which will Drain the Battery; Battery should be "Load examined" at 50% of CCA (chilly Cranking Amps) for 15 Seconds not dropping under 9 Volts in the process the attempt to work out if the Battery will Take & carry a cost. verify that each and one and all Grounds are sparkling & shield (Battery to physique & Block, Alternator to dam, Starter to dam & Block Strap to Firewall).
