Football is a generic term to include soccer, rugby (football) and Gaelic (football).
Its correct term should be Association Football

Football is a term that refers to whichever ball sport is the most popular in that country.

Americans say Football when they mean Gridiron.
British say Football when they mean Soccer or Association Football.
Irish say Football when they mean Gaelic Football.
Australians say Football when they mean Rugby League.

I always find the last one funny since in rugby league you're not supposed to use your foot on the ball! (I'm Aussie by the way, so I'm allowed to take the p!ss)

BTW I edited this after I spoke to my (Scottish) husband when he told me the word soccer is derived from the term 'Association Football'. The term soccer is commonly used in the USA and Australia to mean what most countries call football. So what bearbrain said is correct. Most people who have answered have only said what is known in their own country.

Well, the balls are different. Also, in soccer you are not allowed to pick up the ball unless you're the goalie.
