They can stop preaching against gay people, since their beloved pastors are living a lie, such as Rev. Ted Haggard, and his associate pastor, Rev. Chris Beard (both were kicked out of their church for having gay affairs.)
And now there is Rev. Lonnie Latham, a Southern Baptist preacher (on the Executive Committee), who tried to hire an undercover police officer for sex (see the story below). And going back a while, we remember Rev. Jim Bakker and that entire PTL fiasco, scamming people for money, and then there was Rev. Jimmy Swaggart, who had a passion for prostitutes and pornography, or how about Rev. Marjoe Gortner, who purposely lived a double life all the time while preaching in Pentecostal revival circles. Or, Rev. Benny Hinn, or any of the preachers who teach about the "miracles" in the laughing church. Get the picture? They are exploiting the name of God and using the Bible to sound holy and informed, but their hypocrisy is being exposed!

Many evangelicals have learned a soft approach by not hammering people so hard and avoiding talk of hell and damnation, however, they still believe the same things. It's all a smokescreen. See, they are experts at being flexible with method, but not with model and it's their model that is their problem. Then need to move away from the model that says we were headed for hell, so God sent a son to die on our behalf as the mother of all Temple sacrifices. No matter how deeply they believe that is the only valid Christian theological model, post-moderns will not buy it. This is why the polished megachurches are downplaying it...but be not deceived, they still believe it wholeheartedly.

They can stop being hateful evil bastards.
Oh wait, then they wouldn't be evangelicals.
And why do you have the equality symbol up when you are trying to improve the image of a group who tries to deny gay rights?
*edited to respond to comments*
You didn't say how can they stop being hateful bastards, all your question addressed was their image. Why do you want to improve the image of a group that is hateful and closeminded?
You should be more concerned with how they could learn to be more understanding and less ignorant. I can't for the life of me figure out why you care so much about their image. THEY care about their image. The better the image the more people they can fool.

They need to get more public evangelists to truly live what they preach.
Unfortunately, the ones with the drive to get to the "top" so to speak, are often in it for the money and the fame.
I really think, the only decent, populare evangelist was Billy Grahm. I think he did live what he preached.

the best thing they could do to improve their image would be to voluntarily start paying their fair share of taxes.
the tax exempt status for religions is unconstitutional and a form of affirmative action for religions...

They can stop trying to change all the laws to fit their religion and let liberty lie for everyone, even people who don't share your views.
