How do intelligent human beings follow a religion based on human sacrifice? Whether or not Jesus was "The Son Of God" , he was still in human form when they killed him. And it has nothing to do with who actually crucified him because Christians by definition *needed* and *wanted* him to die for their own salvation.
So cut to 2007, why do people still believe this stuff?
We are talking sacrifice here. They actually believe that you must sacrifice a lamb to get to heaven. Jesus being the lamb in question.
How do they criticize the 'primitive' religions for sacrificing a goat, when they sacrificed a being as well. It doesn't make any sense.

It almost seems like Christianity was like a stepping stone to a more evolved spirituality, but that for some reason the masses got stuck there.

What happened?

Robert,
He couldn't have been resurected if he wasn't first sacrificed.

Doug,
The problem is , a stepping stone to something that should have evolved arlready. The idea of human sacrifice is incredibly primitive for modern day humans. Why something else hasn't evolved, why people still follow a primitive belief system of sacrificing to gods, spilling blood to appease the gods, makes no sense.

I think this is an old roman catholic idea that never really made any sense.

The idea of blood sacrifices is an old Mithran Idea that Paul borrowed to get converts while he was hiding out in tarsus after the real apostles ran him out of Jerusalem. The mithrans believed that blood sacrifices had cleansing properties so Paul told them that God had sacrificed his son Jesus to atone for their sins. It worked like a charm and he got lots of converts. The church noticed how well this idea worked and Incorporated it into the roman catholic dogma. It has remained there ever since.

When the other christian sects broke away from the catholics they kept this idea as a part of their belief system.

You have it slightly wrong.

And while the theology of sacrifice and redemption is peculiar in many ways, it does make sense. Any good theologian can explain it to you.

All the old sacrifices and practices were merely a stepping stone to Christianity, which is the prophetic fulfillment of all the old things, and a new law unto itself.

Until Christ comes again, it will just have to do.
