I checked with the civil aviatin authority and providing my plane is under the 20kg weight band insurance exemptions exist. Why do people keep telling me to join a club to fly. Is it just acon to get me to part with my money?

No, it is just common sense. Model aircraft can be and have proved to be in the past, lethal 'weapons'. They can kill and can do incredible damage. The idea of joining a Club is to ensure that you are trained to fly correctly and safely. Very difficult on your own. The other point about insurance is rather obvious. If you caused damage or injury with your model, do you have the wherewith all to pay the compensation, which in the case of personal injury or death, (it has happened), could be 100s of 1000s of pounds? Joining an affiliated Club will ensure you are insured to cover any such incident, with the ensuing peace of mind. You don't have to insure your house, but I bet you do.

Ok -- with any activity there are risks -- there is the risk that you may fly your airplane through someones gullet - slicing and dicing his liver and other organs in the process - has happened. The family sues you and without the liability insurance you could be in debt the rest of your life and you would loose any assets you may have. The club is the best way to learn -- these things aren't easy to fly and chances are you will need all the help you can get. Once you have learned and developed some skill you can leave the club and go out on your own.

The club needs to be insured and for everyone in the club to be insured to maintain use of their flying facility. Without insurance no field - no field no hobby.

I live in the U.S.A. and can't get to your money .

If you can afford a decent model aircraft you can afford to insure it fully comp.
Clubs do tend to have the insurance thing well covered with specialists. The average insurer which you would normally deal with does not have a clue.
Claims for injury or damage these days are also into 5 or even 6 figures due to the Americanisation of risk which means every one will jump on the band wagon make a claim for as much as possible for the smallest incident real or otherwise.

No offense but if your worried about people giving you the wrong answer this is not the place to turn... I think that the whole join a club thing is just a way to share your hobby with others... Its no different than joining a team or band to share you hobby and talent with others...
