The current answers depend on who is paying for the research. A cell phone transmits radio waves. Putting a transmitter as close as a cell phone is to your body raises the amount of radiation passing through your body. High levels of radio waves can cause mutation of cells but what that level is hasn't been completely identified. The same problem exists for users of walkie talkie type radios but these people generally spend less time transmitting than a cell phone user.

Play it safe and limit your time on a cell phone.
