Visiting a Caribbean island for a first date should be very successful no matter which one. But my advice will be to go to Puerto Rico. It is a US territory so you do not need passports, which are now required for every other Caribbean destination. Also it has pristine beaches, lots of nature and adventure activities, lots of history and museums, plenty of romantic spots. Old San Juan is mellow, laid back, romantic, full of paths for endless strolls next to the shore line, trendy, creole, and American restaurants. In other words it gives you plenty of choices regarding what to do. In most Caribbean islands all you have is the beach. Also English is the 2nd official language of the island, language will not be a problem. Visit www.gotopuertorico.com for more info and pictures.

St John (US Virgin Isles) Perfect for time and space on your own. St Thomas, a ferry ride away has all the shops you could wish for. St John is a national park. Only one fault, Paradise is expensive.

Nassau, Bahamas....tons to do and it's not so isolated and overly romantic that it would seem weird or too much. Affordable as well.
