I was in the army and we had our fair share of fainters on parade from young heathly people
The reasons are:
Standing too long in one place (blood settling to the lower half of the body)
Skipping breakfast (low sugar)
Restrictive clothing (cutting blood flow to the brain)
High emotion (Adrenalin related)
Hot closed areas with little ventilation
It all comes down to the brain being starved of Oxygen

I hear more about brides, grooms, and attendents fainting at weddings. I'm getting married in 2009 and I'm not having a full church service because I know I'll pass out and the reason is that it's too long for me to stand in one position. I fainted in church a few years ago because I had to stand for a long time and it was hot and crowded, and I almost fainted at a funeral for the same reason - these are the only situations where I tend to pass out like that. If there's any other "real" reason I have no idea what it is...

To be honest, it depends on who it is.
If it were one of the bridal party, they can often faint because the are expected to stay still and not move (within reason) for the whole ceremony. Also, they might not have eaten for a while even the whole day, they might not have the energy to keep going.
For the parents, it is an emotional time. They could be so excited they forget to breathe (sounds silly I know) or be hating the wedding so much that they also forget to breathe.
For the guests, Maybe they are just emotional.

Locked knees. I've been at 2 weddings where people have fainted, and that was the reason. But I agree with the other answers, many different things contribute.

Are you speaking of your wedding party?
Mostly because the person is scared, locks their knees and the blood can't flow properly. Make sure they've had something to eat that morning & are also well hydrated.
If you are referring to people attending, people faint for a variety of reasons, health problems would be #1, like a drop in blood sugar with a diabetic; hyperventillating, lack of tolerance for extreme heat, getting up too fast, drop in blood pressure, anything that causes the brain lack of oxygen.

It's the tension; the having to get up early and maybe drive a long distance to get there; having to put on all your best clothes and hope no-one else is wearing the same; having to stnad in church for a long time;breath holding with the tension.
My sister fainted at my wedding; she was my chief bridesmaid;
she had been quiet during the ceremony...nxt thing was, I heard this little moan, and saw her going sideways...the best man just got to her before she hit the ground!

Most of the time it is because the bridesmaid or groomsmen lock their knees when standing. I guess it cuts off the circulation.
Also getting married in the the summer heat with a tux or pantyhose and a heavy dress (with no aor conditioning) does not help either.
so people just pysch themselves out, standing in front of people, which makes them nervous, trying to stand up straight, which in turn, they lock up knees! =)

often it is due to lack of food and liquid, not wishing to have the urge to pee during the ceremony and therefore being totally dehydrated. Add in having to wear often heavy and hot costumes (wedding dresses and suits can be HOT) then you have a surefire recipe for someone to faint.
It happens a lot!

Uhm, they are standing up too long during the boring ceremony and faint either that or they drank too much at the reception.
