In old age, merely being alive, with what capabilities I still have for independent movement, enjoying life, the world, and the companionship of those I love - and learning new things to think about. With age one learns that happiness is an attitude of mind, and great joy comes from appparently ordinary things one has taken for granted in youth. And, whilst retaining dreams to pursue, one also learns to live in the finite present instead of making oneself hostage to fantasies of the future. We waste much of our youth and middle age on the urgent rather than the important, and on hope rather than what we have. But old age, with luck and reflection, in recompense for its limitations, sets us free to enjoy life if we've learned to do so, and death then looms only as a kind of final freedom which we hope will not cost us too highly - which is why I campaign for euthenasia, especially since having cancer! Happiness doesn't come from externalities - it stems rather from how we respond to them. So I like Sands104's answer too, now I've read it!

Happiness is a choice we all have to make for ourselves. When one awakens each morning he/she can decide that today I am going to be happy. I am going to be satisfied with what I have. I am going to look for the best in other people, and I am going to find joy in the act of being alive. Sooo....My answer is that I make me happy because I choose to be happy.

It makes me happy when I'm around my friends, and they're happy, and we're having a good time, because I really love my friends.
It makes me happy when I'm wearing a black shirt and it doesn't have fuzzies on it.
It makes me happy when it snows, and when we have a snow day. It makes me happy to walk outside while it's snowing and hear the sound of snow. It's so quiet and peaceful, and perfect.

Just simply being alive. I think that's the greatest gift. Though life can be short and at times meaningless, being alive is the most fulfilling and happy thing.
