What are the negative effects for the child?

I'm no expert, I only have my teaching experience to draw upon here, but I would say that it would be important to talk about the issues with the child - otherwise, how will he/she ever make sense of it, and learn to recover from it?
Obviously if something very traumatic has happened, it might be wise to approach the subject with care, but if you don't talk about it with the child, he/she might grow up thinking they were to blame or whatever, they won't learn to deal with it.
Hope this helps!

It is helpful for them as long as they feel comfortable discussing it and are not pushed into talking about anything that they ar enot ready to discuss. Let them take the lead.

Life story work is very important and should only be undertaken by a trained professional. Don't fool about with it.

Ambiguity. Get it wrong and it can go very wrong. Get it right and the child will get over it.
