What a great question.

I think the United States greatest strength was its ability to integrate people from many backgrounds and give them a common platform from which to succeed. E pluribus unum, etc.

In the early years of the country, just getting here was a major accomplishment, and so, as a rule, only the most motivated and creative people even attempted the journey. America didn't make any promises, it only offered opportunity and it was up to the individual to succeed or fail.

Conversely, the past 40 years have seen unrestricted "immigration" and massive government boondoggles designed to guarantee outcome (something that can only be accomplished by reducing everyone to the lowest common denominator). As a result, America's greatest strength has now become its greatest liability.

In an age when anyone can sneak across the borders, or catch a cheap jet flight from anywhere and then simply "forget" to return home, you no longer have the same natural selection mechanisms in place.

Layer on top of that the suicidal doctrines of "multiculturalism" and "diversity" and you have the perfect recipe for the balkanization and hyphenization that keeps much of the third world at each other's throats.

I can tell you that the weakness is its economy. Basically the US dollar is tied to oil while most other countries currency is tied to gold. What this means is that the US have to ensure that oil is continually traded in dollars - Saddam traded his oil after 2000 in Euros and look what happened to him. Iran are trading in Euros since 2006 and look at threat that they are under and Venezuela are thinking about trading in Euros and they are rapidly climbing the US's evil country list.

So how does Euro trading affect the US economy. Well firstly the fact that oil is traded in dollars allows the US to import good very cheaply. Basically they print dollars for next to nothing and use these dollars to import goods. Everyone needs dollars to buy oil so they are forced to trade with the US. The US currently runs a 48% trade deficit which means it imports 48% more than it exports.

Euros trading gives countries another option and it will be the EU getting imported good for next to nothing. The Dollar is already weak €1 buys $1.3. When people have an option to buy oil in Euros then the dollar value will drop even more and as more dollars are held outside the US than within it many will be traded for Euros hitting the dollar value further. Add to this the US $8.7 trillion national debt and you can see that recession is coming. Bush is currently trying to fend off this threat by military action in countries that trade in Euros - Iraq was first, iran is next and possibly venezuela will be next after that.

The greatest strength that the US has... well that is more difficult. I honestly can't really identify one except the will of the people. As much as I hate US foreign policy in fighting wars to protect their economy I honestly find the American people some of the warmest, friendliest and strong hearted people I have met.

extremist liberal democrats who use the iraq war as a mask for tax and spend politics...the problem is someone, usually the working poor, has to pay for their mess. thats the weakness. the strength is the freedom that fighting against al qaeda and not cut and run will maintain. we have the freedoms like few other countries in the world and most here dont understand people die every day to get what they take for granted.
