Capricorn is a constellation. It is a selection of stars that seem to make a pattern when viewed from the earth. The stars in the constellation are unrelated but they are useful for astronomers when navigating the night sky.
It is one of the twelve constellations that lie on the zodiac, the plane of the ecliptic. The Sun, the Moon and the planets follow this path across the sky. Actually there are thirteen constellations on the zodiac but astrologers seem to ignore Ophiucus for some reason. They also ignore precession which has shifted all the Sun signs by about a month. People are really in the sign before the one the astrologers tell them. Capricorn is 19 January to 5 February. Most people who think they are Capricorns are really Sagittarians.
