Shirdi Temple is very close to Kopergaon. So by train take Chennai-Ahmedabad Navjeevan Express which departs from Chennai Central at 0925 am everyday and alight at Kopergaon. From Kopergaon there are numerous busues n taxis to Shirdi.

From Chennai the Navajeevan express goes upto Ahmedabad. It passes through Pushaval. Get down there and catch another train to Manmad. You can catch a bus there to Shirdi.
Reaching Shirdi:The nearest airport is Aurangabad (144 Km/90 mile) which Sri Saibabais connected by Indian Airlines and private airlines with other cities / towns. The convinent rail heads are Nasik(123 Km/76 mile) and Manmad (60 Km/37 mile). Shirdi is well connected by Road with Mumbai via Nashik-Sinnar and Manmad. You can get the taxis from Dadar-Mumbai(Journey Time-7 hours) up to Shirdi or you can get the Luxury Coach for Shirdi or take a train up to Nasik and take a taxi for Shirdi.

Just now we were back from shirdi trip.

From Chennai, the straight forward route is , take mumbai train, get down at Daund Jn and get another train from daund Jn to Kopergaon Jn(20 kms to shirdi). We took a big auto-[Looked like share auto of chennai] (Which costed 200Rs for the whole auto with no sharing with others) as no cab is available in the junction

Alternate route is :
1.Chennai to Jalgaon by navjeevan express
2.Jalgaon to Manmad Jn (Shirdi is 60 kms and a cab costs 550 Rs) OR even you can get a train to Kopergaon Jn direct train too

General info:
1. Both the routes will take approximately 30 - 32 Hours (Chennai to Shirdi. With all the transit , changing trains etc etc)
2. We stayed at MTDC (Maharashtra tourism developement corporation) Pilgrims inn which is decent value for money and it's just 200 metres from sai mandir -- In case you need my complete review ,you can see it in www.indiamike.com--If you need further info , leave PM from there and I can give further info in case of need
3. Right now climate is Ok in shirdi with cool nights & day is almost like chennai
4. There will always be a Queue in Sai mandir & darshan will take atleast 2 hours.
5. Actual train costs, Please check in www.indianrail.gov.in as it all depends on which class you would like to travel
6.If you can afford flight, Take a flight to Mumbai and from there(Kalyan Jn), Manmad Jn is just 4.5 hours by train and you have around 18 - 20 trains daily
7.Thursdays are supposed to be auspicious in shirdi
