Obviously I hope I'm wrong, but is the British Blair government capable of creating a good day for bad news, is it capable of sanctioning the sabotage of the points of a train track, in a remote location, on a day when it really needed something to divert the headlines - the day of the stop the war coalition march through London?

The Department of Dirty Tricks is capable of anything. Somehow I do not see a connection between the Virgin train crash in Cumbria and Tony Blair's government. We will not know the cause of the crash, which for the moment is believed to be a set of points which may be faulty or not, until there has been a full investigation. The track is closed for the time being while this is carried out.
I think Mojo has a point - pun intended - in a democracy any hair-brained scheme is possible but only in the minds of the insane who seem to have somehow taken over the asylum.

Not only are they capable.. They DO manufacture events to shroud their ills. Three of the best hours I spend on a weekend is listening to George Galloway over the Internet, not only that, I now refuse to listen or watch News 24 which is cabled through the USA.
The Blair Broadcasting Corporation is bringing un-biazed news reporting into disrepute. The days of the Robin Day, The Dimblebys and Frost are gone. We are now left with Fox News like vacuous individuals who virtually read from pre-prepared scripts. These people make me sick.
The deaths of Dr. David Kelly, the unexplained 7/7 events and Mossad involvement are just examples of a very dangerous administration.
For the BBC and the British police which are full of selected Blair cronies to claim only 6-10K peoples were involved in a march in which independent observers have claimed to number more than 60K, says all I need to know.

I suppose we must accept that history has shown 'governments' (or at least the people behind them) are capable of the most despicable things.
I can understand how cynical we all have become about a lot of issues due to the appalling misuse of our language to obfuscate and 'confuse' the facts at every opportunity in order to retain power.
So it would be possible for the Government to do this, however, cynical as I am about many things, I think it more likely that this will turn out to be incompetence or negligence driven perhaps by cost considerations placed above safety.
It could of course just turn out to be a very sad and unfortunate mistake by someone who is now having nightmares and going through a terrible personal time. A death on your conscience however accidental must be a terrible burden to have to carry for the rest of your life.

The British, whether under Blair or not, are not only capable of sabotage but use it for diversion purposes just as often as the USA does. It's that simple.
Both governments, the USA and the British, have master this which is commonly called, 'Wagging the Dog'.

All governments are capable of sabotage, corruption abounds today, any leader is capable of creating news to divert their own inadequacy's, and failures to some other object or person, I think this practice has been going on for years.

good question, this government is renown for its spin, so anything possible, although I'd like to think its not sank to the depths of America, was 9/11 a conspires ? If they were responsible for the train crash then they should hang their heads in shame.

Probably not.
I asked the same question over in the "Current Events" section. See the link below. And got mullered.
Another conspiracy theory: Maybe it was Murdoch who wanted to discredit the Virgin brand.

The list goes on and on and on!
As for the schools lottery fiasco, it only goes to proves Labours long standing political viewpoint, 'that selection should not be made on ability' and judging by the deeds of some of the useless clowns in office now it is the one political point they seem to stick to.........
