When I plug it in, a sound appears as if the USB is detected but it is NOT on My Computer and does not apear near the clock. I have really important files there. I have used it before and it was fine. What could have happened? I was told that because I just unplugged it without removing it first could have done damage. WHAT do I do now?? I am not using any another devices at the moment and I tried to right click on My computer disk management and it is not there either, please help!

Is it an external disk drive? If so, maybe you need a special dual USB connector? Several external disks I've used before have a USB cable with a small connector on one end and two usb connections on the other. One of those is for data and power and the other is just for power.

Firstly I would try plugging the usb device in to a different usb port, this can sometimes help as it will re-installed the usb driver.

Secondly, I would test the usb device on a different PC/Mac. This then will confirm if its a PC or USB device issue.

Thirdly, try plugging in the usb device, then restart your system leavig the usb device attached.

Is this a flash pen you're using? If so, go into Control Panel and click on "Add Hardware" to add the USB device manually.
