Let the integers be x and x + 2

The required linear equation would be:
2(x + 2) = 3x - 40
2x + 4 = 3x - 40
2x = 3x - 40 -4
2x = 3x - 44
2x - 3x = -44
-x = -44
x = 44
x + 2 = 46

The required integers are 44 and 46

Let l be the larger and s be the smaller
then:

l-s=2
2l + 40 = 3s

(1) 2l - 2s = 4
(2) 2l -3s = -40

Substracting (2) from (1) we get
s = 44

from l-s = 2 we get l=46
