Hamsters tend to bite when they are frightened. Do you chase your hamster to pick him/her up? If so this could be the reason.

You hamster needs to know he/she is safe. Put your hand in the top part of the cage and just leave it there. Don't ever chase your hamster. Each day do this several times if possible. After you feel the hamster is calm enough put your hand in more. Continue doing this tell you can lay your hand on the bottom of the cage with palm up. Eventually your hamster will come and sit on your hand. Maybe a little treat in your hand will help. When the hamster does sit on your hand don't move it. After a while you can raise your hand a few inches but not too much upward. If at any time the hamster still feel fear then go back to the last action. Eventually you will be able to raise your hand out of the cage and your hamster will not have fear and will enjoy sitting in your hand.

This takes time and patience and the more time you work with him/her the better they turn out.

NEVER FORCE HIM/HER TO DO ANYTHING THEY DON'T WANNA DO & TRY NOT TO JUMP OR SHOW FEAR OF THEM.

Good Luck hun.

I'm unsure how old your hamster is but I do know that most pet stores tell you to wait at least a week before trying to handle them so that they can get use to you, although I know when I first got my hamster she wouldn't let me touch her... although that changed and I'll tell you what I did...

- first off wash your hands because you gotta make sure there clean an that they don't smell like food. since that will make them bite.

- second go to your bag of shavings and pick up a bunch and rub them all over your hands, the thing is it's a familiar scent for the hamster and it shouldn't spook her.

- put your hand in the cage and let her sniff you, the reason for her biting you is because hamsters generally check to see if something is edible by trying to bite it, and when your hands are in the cage she should sniff you and perhaps walk on your hands too but don't try to pick her up just let her get comfortable with your hands and with you... if she happens to bite then I suggest giving her extra time or try trick #2

Trick #2

take a hamster drop, and hold it with your thumb and first finger so that the hamster has to take it from you, to allow it get use to being close to you... just don't do this once in hopes of her allowing you to hold her because it wont' work this will take time to do so...

I have a little pet mouse that used to do the same thing. I guess that she was just a little scared of me. Over time she probably reaized that I am not going to harm her so she does not try to bite me anymore. Remember these are tiny animals that are used to being preyed upon, so to them they must think we are a giant getting ready to make lunch out of them! Hopefully over time your hamster will realize that is not the case, and will trust you. Good luck! Patience will pay off.

I used to have a hamster who bit my friend, when it bit my friend I was very afraid to hold it.I didn't hold it since then but i do stroke it until it got used to me and then I decided to pick it up and it didn't bite me.

What ever you do,dont hold it when you've touched hamster food, they can smell it and it may bite you.

get something with thick layers on it so he cant bite throough it eventually he will learn that you arent trying to hurt him but do this 1-2 times a day enough that he will understand but not to much more to stress him out

Wear thin winter gloves when you handle him for now, and make sure to handle him gently and often. When he seems more comfortable with you, try it with the gloves off.

i had a few hamsters...yeah they bite its just natural because theyre so tiny and so scared all the time so theyre gonna be quite defensive so its normal! just dont shake them and hold them too much...u can pet them, but try not to hold it, cus they get dizzy and motion sickness....remember, theyre TINYYYYYYYYYYY creatures...........so be careful!!!!!!!!!!
