I have one bit of advice. If you're built like a tank, don't wear the top.

Tanks can be very fashionable. But be considerate and follow some simple rules. Wear clear deodorant and make sure you are cleanly shaven. Wear a racer back or strapless bra preferably with some light padding to give a smooth front. And make sure the top fits the setting, not in church etc... Also the new tissue weight tanks provide some great looks while layering.

It depends on what you are wearing with it and for which occasion.Lets say for example you wear a tank top with a horrible patterned grandma-ish skirt to a dinner party then its unfashionable.If you wear a tank top with shorts on a day out to the beach with your pals then its fashionable as long as the top and bottom matches together.
If lets say you're a guy,you can wear it with bermudas or shorts but obviously not with pants.Then its a fashion disaster with pants.

no they're not unfashionable, who told you that? they actually not only look great in the summer but you can wear them over longsleeve shirts too. you can wear them under shirts and layer them, wear them under jackets, over a long sleeve shirt, by themselves, or over a bathing suit...
