In history there are many individuals that can be considered "great". The question is, how do we determine if someone is "great". Please list your ideas.
Also explain (if you can) why the following are considered great:
Pericles,
Alexander the Great
Hannibal

This is an awesome question! People have so many different opinions as to what makes someone great. As a Christian, I would hold someone to a Biblical standard. As to the three men you mentioned, I believe they are remembered as great because of their success and brilliance. For example, Alexander the Great had conquered over half the world by age 30. Hannibal was an incredible military strategist and was very successful in his battles with Rome.

The new world is scary and for someone to go out there and discover it i guess would be consider great. Hannibal's most famous achievement was at the outbreak of the Second Punic War, when he marched an army, which included war elephants, from Iberia over the Pyrenees and the Alps into northern Italy. People are great for going to war.. so i guess Bush will be too :(

By how accepted or unaccepted their thinking was or by their actions and deeds and how extensive it touched humanity.
It's suprising Constantine (who helped make the Cathloic Church what is is today) and King James (who helped found the new world and commissioned the most accepted Bible) aren't really high on the list!
But Galelleo's contributions to relativity and astronomy and gravity and physics are self evident, as are Newton's contributions.
We'll see if Hawkings is remembers much in 200 years. Well, WE won't see but your great, great grand kids will!

Greatness is a idea we (mankind) came up with.
Only we can place greatness on someone or something.
The ability's or accomplishments of others that we admire we refer to as great.
Its simply a term we use to show respect or a way to honor.

we are great in making the history. they are famous when they played extraordinary mission and accomplishments in the society,that made them recognize as great also.
