Certain culture hold some colours auspicious.

Gujarati's consider red and green more as good colours for the occasion. Other cultures consider black more appropriate for any occasion.

Other answers reflect that sentiments.

Because green looks like a really happy color, and usually people are happy on their birthday. So green just makes it look like you're having fun

do they? i never noticed it nor would i prefer only green.

it is personal choice about which colour to wear. there is no hard and fast rule that one should wear green on a b'day.
