I've been learning to play the violin for about two years to now. I still feel like I'm not good enough compare to others. My parents think that I should not play anymore because they think that learning for two years should be already good by now even though they say that I'm not progressing. I just want to know how long it takes to be a professional violinist so I could tell them that it doesn't take two years to be one.

At least 8 years for a good violinist. For a really, really good violinist, over 10. Maybe you should practice for longer and talk about the violin more so they know you're interested in it and are committed to playing it. Lessons are expensive so they probably don't want to waste money if you're not interested. It depends on how often you practice, but if you put in another hour on top of the time you already practice for every day, you should find it a lot quicker.

Both your parents and yourself should have confidence in your ability. Anyone can play an instrument if they put in the time and effort, and patience is key! You won't regret it if you don't give up; it's so rewarding and it's a nice thing to be able to do.

And not a single violinist on the planet would say it even takes 5 years to get really, really good. Show your parents these answers!

Good luck and practice! =)

It all depends on one thing. You! First of all if you love playing it shouldn't matter how long it takes however if you really feel you are not progressing maybe you should change your methods of practicing and the duration of practice. If you don't already have a teacher get one and if you can't, buy a couple of books and check out the internet - there's plenty of resources out there.

(this is just my opinion but..) You should not feel that you have to practice just to get better. Sometimes just try to have fun playing something you love.. this might help your own intimate relationship with your instrument and with the music. And if when playing you just plan to have fun, it takes the pressure of feeling restrained to just doing the exercises. Just play because you like to do it for its own sake.

Also you might want to make friends with some other violinists and get some tips from them;). Check out some videos of violinists and watch their posture, watch their fingers, listen to their sound and imitate them in your mind.

One last thing, check out some ear training and theory of music. Music is the language of sound so get some ear training and everything else you do in music will naturally improve.

Practice makes perfect. I know this is cliche but it is also very true. Tell your parents to back off if they can't do any better, and if they can tell them to show you how.

Anyways to be a professional (in anything) it takes years and years of practice and even then professionals keep learning.

hahaha, I'd say it varies, really. It's the same with any craft or trade, it just takes practice. Some people might pick it up and two weeks later be world class, while others may take many years. If it's something you love, then don't worry about how long it'll take and tell your parents to shove off, because it's something you love to do and they should support you in it.
From what I've read of the greats, many of them have been playing for a decade or more; so you've still got 8 years to go hehe.
Anyways, I hope you win your folks over, and more importantly, keep playing. Best of luck to ya!

You can't account it in time. It depends on how much you practice, how much of that time is concentrated practice, your natural abilities, your teacher, your environment, etc. Some people say 10,000 hours (that's good efficient hours!) is enough to make one a proficient violinist. So assuming you practice 3 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year, it comes out to a little over 9 years. ;)

different ppl progress at different speeds .there is no set time. u become a good violinist the same way you get to Carnagie Hall. Practice, Practice, Practice. if u talk to a violin virtuoso, they'll tell u they're still learning. u never perfect it. it's a talent that constantly needs to be honed and refined. just keep at it, and you'll do fine.

How fast you advance has a lot to do with your interest level. The more time you spend practicing, the more you learn. I had a student who was just learning because he was required and he didn't learn enough as one who was interested in learning.
When I was taking lessons, I would do what my teacher asked me to do, and also practice more. I would do extra pages in the book every time. At the end of 2 years, she said I learned as much as her 5 year students.
