... And where did it come from? This has been nagging at the back of my mind for a gross amount of time, and I cannot find an answer for the life of me. So, have any ideas? Because not knowing is quite bothersome...

It originated from the German phrase: "Alle, alle auch sind frei";

meaning:

"Everyone, everyone else is also free."

Wiki says it's a variant of "All 'e, All'e, Outs in free!" Which means the it (out) has come back to home base, and the game is over, basically. However, the booksrag site has a lot of different variants. Try searching "hide and seek" oxen history and you'll get tons of information.
